SIAI-Marchetti SF260

In September, we repositioned a modernized SIAI-Marchetti SF.260 from Strasbourg to Manching for a qualitative evaluation. We assessed the Marchetti and its capabilities as a potential training aircraft for test pilots and flight test engineers at Euro Flight Test. The SF260 underwent further testing by legendary test pilot Robert Hierl, before I got to fly it back to Strasbourg with its owner.
This particular SF.260 had undergone extensive upgrades, including a full Garmin avionics suite, a three-blade variable-pitch MT propeller, and a fresh paint job. The aircraft was configurable with either 4 seats or 2 seats and a large tank for smoke oil.
Over four test flights, the aircraft proved to be an absolute asset. Acceptable performance and handling qualities with easily identifiable shortcomings. These characteristics make it an ideal platform for use in test pilot schools.
The evaluation was a fun experience, showcasing how a well-modernized aircraft can provide an exciting and effective learning tool for the next generation of aviation professionals.
